The ecosystem has been turned upside down by 'EIP-8363 (Tapered Issuance Burn)', co-proposed by Ethereum researcher Justin Drake. This proposal contains a very bold mechanism that dynamically burns validator rewards as the staking ratio increases, aiming to reduce the net reward rate to zero once the staking ratio reaches 50%.
Fierce backlash is erupting from both institutional circles and the community. SharpLink CEO Joseph Shalom warned that this proposal would destroy the value of Liquid Staking Tokens (LSTs), which act as the benchmark interest rate for the DeFi ecosystem, thereby threatening a $35 billion collateral ecosystem. The criticism is that Ethereum's greatest weapon against Bitcoin—its identity as an 'interest-bearing asset'—is at risk of disappearing.
Individual validators, known as solo stakers, are also deeply outraged. There is significant criticism regarding the procedural aspect, as the proposal was submitted as a surprise just two days before the review deadline for the Pectra (Hegota) upgrade, leaving no room for adequate discussion. Furthermore, there is a biting counterargument that if rewards are cut, solo stakers without economies of scale will be the first to be squeezed out compared to large whales, which would ultimately encourage the centralization of staking.
While the researchers' intention to prevent rapid supply inflation is understandable, the scuffle is likely to continue for a while as it impacts the ecosystem's roots—solo stakers and the DeFi market—simultaneously. We will have to keep a close eye on how this intense battle affects the upcoming Pectra (Hegota) upgrade schedule.
