Cronos Network Temporarily Halted — Tectonic $75M Hack

The Cronos network, supported by Crypto.com, has been temporarily halted. This follows an exploit on Tectonic, a major lending protocol within the ecosystem, which resulted in the drainage of approximately $75 million in assets. According to reports from Cointelegraph and Coinness, the attacker allegedly manipulated the price of TONIC, Tectonic's native token, to take out abnormally large collateralized loans.

Fortunately, the Crypto.com app and its exchange services were not affected and are operating normally. Furthermore, a significant portion of the stolen funds remains locked within the Cronos network. The network halt appears to be a prompt measure to prevent further outflows or transfers to chains like Ethereum. It's frustrating to see these attacks exploiting oracle pricing or collateral liquidity in DeFi lending protocols happen again and again. It will be worth keeping an eye on how funds are recovered once network operations resume, and what security reinforcements the protocol will implement.
