Regulatory Innovation in Japan vs. DeFi Security Incidents: A Market Running at 'Two Speeds'

The crypto market is currently showing two starkly contrasting trends. On one side, large-scale regulatory institutionalization is becoming a reality, while on the other, repeated losses from primitive security failures continue to limit the market's upside.

The most notable change is coming from Japan. With the Japanese House of Representatives passing a bill to regulate cryptocurrencies more like formal securities, plans are underway to reduce crypto tax rates—which have been as high as 55%—to the 20% level applicable to stocks. By resolving regulatory uncertainty and paving the way for the launch of crypto ETFs, this could serve as a powerful catalyst for long-term institutional capital inflows.

However, behind this institutional progress lies the reality of vulnerable on-chain security. Recently, Humanity Protocol suffered a loss of approximately $36 million due to a private key leak caused by a hacked employee laptop. This caused the token price to plummet instantly, dealing a blow to on-chain trust.

Ultimately, the current market is at 'two speeds,' with a gap between the pace at which institutional infrastructure is maturing and the pace at which individual DeFi ecosystems manage security risks. While the long-term macro structure is improving, it is highly likely that this mixed sentiment, where short-term operational risks hold back progress, will persist for the time being.
