A Marine recruit who fled Pohang on a KTX train bound for Seoul was caught at Daejeon Station after a four-hour pursuit. Around 12:40 PM on the 8th, a private from the Marine 1st Division Tank Battalion jumped the base fence and deserted. It was an impulsive act by a recruit who had only been stationed for two days and was still in the middle of adaptation training.

While he was apprehended without further incident thanks to quick coordination between military and railway police using CCTV tracking and train schedule analysis, public reaction remains cold. It is difficult to dismiss this simply as the impulsive departure of one recruit, as recent news coming from this unit is deeply concerning.

In fact, the Marine 1st Division has seen a series of incidents in the past month that cast doubt on the unit's management. Just five days before the desertion, on August 3rd, a non-commissioned officer died from a gunshot wound at off-base lodgings. This exposed glaring holes in security, as it remains unclear how weapons and live ammunition could be removed from the base without any restraint. That is not all. In July, soldiers forced a soldier who had collapsed from heatstroke and rhabdomyolysis—and was medically advised to rest—to participate in training, causing his condition to worsen and leading to re-hospitalization.

From recruit management and firearm security to the treatment of injured soldiers, alarm bells are ringing across the board regarding the unit's operations. This is why the public is expressing deep concern not just about the outcome of this KTX chase, but about what is actually happening inside the Marine 1st Division. This incident must serve as a catalyst for a serious assessment of systemic flaws within the unit.
