A debate surrounding a single piece of glass is heating up the global IT industry and Wall Street. This is due to an intense battle over the truth regarding the fate of the 'all-glass iPhone' that Apple is preparing for the 20th anniversary of the iPhone in 2027.
It started with a report from the US investment bank Jefferies. Jefferies downgraded their investment rating, stating that Apple had completely cancelled the all-glass iPhone project due to low production yields. However, the very next day, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg directly refuted this. He explained that while an extreme, completely metal-free design was indeed shelved in the early development stages, the development of a glass-centric commemorative model—which wraps the front, back, and sides in curved glass with a very thin metal frame—is still sailing smoothly.
Adding to this, the famous Chinese IT leaker Digital Chat Station provided clues to the controversy by sharing component information captured from the supply chain. According to the leaked info, it appears Apple has adopted a method of placing 'quad-curved glass' that bends on all four sides over a flat screen. It is a clever attempt at an optical illusion, using light refraction to make the device look like a solid glass body with no bezels at all. It remains to be seen what the actual product will look like as Apple's compromise to bypass technical manufacturing limitations while achieving a futuristic design.
