Crypto Trading
The Russian State Duma has finally made a move. On July 21 local time, the Russian parliament passed a bill officially allowing the use of cryptocurrency for cross-border trade settlements. The law is set to go into effect on September 1. While domestic payments remain prohibited, the intent is clear: Russia plans to actively use crypto as a tool for cross-border trade to circumvent sanctions.
Interestingly, a report released by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) on the same day perfectly aligns with this trend. The BIS analyzed how dollar-based stablecoins are accelerating a phenomenon of 'digital dollarization' in emerging markets, effectively neutralizing government capital controls. Their warning suggests that because stablecoins operate across borders outside regulatory frameworks—unlike traditional foreign currency deposits—they could undermine national monetary sovereignty.
Russia's legalization of trade settlements and the BIS warning ultimately point in the same direction. It means that crypto has now moved beyond the realm of speculative assets to become a tool that fundamentally shakes capital flows and financial infrastructure between nations.
It remains to be seen what regulatory cards governments will play to curb the spread of stablecoins, or whether more countries will embrace this trend and use them for trade. I'm really curious to see how things evolve. haha
