Starknet has opened a non-binding Snapshot vote asking STRK stakers whether to research transitioning from an Ethereum L2 into an independent, post-quantum L1 blockchain. StarkWare pointed to dependencies on Ethereum's upgrade roadmap for bridging and data availability as a primary driver. Even if the proposal moves forward, STRK will remain the native token and existing Ethereum bridges will stay active.

This proposal reflects a broader trend among major protocols re-evaluating their infrastructure trade-offs. At the same time, DeFi leaders like Aave are looking outward, with Babylon Labs proposing native Bitcoin collateral integration for Aave V4. Both moves highlight how top Web3 teams are rethinking cross-chain dependencies and sovereign execution to position themselves for long-term growth.
