Moodist, create your own background soundscape by mixing rain and nature sounds
Sometimes, music with lyrics is distracting, but total silence makes every minor sound around you stand out. This is a project that lets you curate your own background soundscape to help you work better in that space between.
Moodist is a free, open-source web app that lets you combine various ambient sounds directly in your browser. The official site currently offers 84 different sounds categorized into Nature, Rain, Animals, City, Places, Transport, Objects, and Noise.
Select your sounds and adjust each volume level
You can pick familiar sounds like flowing river water, a crackling campfire, or rain on a window, and adjust their volumes individually. Create your atmosphere by layering sounds like distant train whistles over rainfall, or blending birds chirping with water sounds. You can even choose between white, pink, and brown noise.
Below is the sound selection interface from the official web app. Each sound has its own selection button and volume slider, so you can see exactly which ingredients you're mixing and at what intensity.

Start easily without installation or registration
The web version is ready to use immediately without any sign-up or subscriptions. You can bookmark your favorite sound mixes, and the source code is available on GitHub.
If you need lyric-free background noise for writing or coding, or if you'd like to fine-tune the mix of cafe, rain, or nature sounds, it's worth a look. Rather than viewing it as a guaranteed tool for focus or sleep, think of it as a small app for building a custom sound environment that suits your taste.
