Coinsbuy hacked for $7.9 million — will this accelerate the shift to institutional custody?

There is a growing sense of unease in the crypto security space. Following a security breach on Sunday, the crypto payment platform Coinsbuy had a massive $7.9 million worth of ETH and TRX stolen. Coinsbuy is currently offering a $100,000 bounty for information on the hacker and has thankfully stated that they will fully compensate customers for any losses.

What is interesting here is BlackRock's recent market analysis. BlackRock noted that they are seeing a trend where Bitcoin investors are turning toward regulated institutional custody services or ETFs due to security concerns and the challenges of self-custody.

As hacker techniques become more sophisticated with the use of AI, such as advanced phishing, the difficulty of protecting assets as an individual has risen significantly. It’s worth watching whether these security threats will paradoxically act as a catalyst, accelerating the movement of funds toward institutional custody and secure financial products. haha
