A National Assembly public petition calling for the deferral and abolition of the domestic crypto tax has secured over 50,000 signatures and has been referred to the Strategy and Finance Committee. Having reached a final total of over 58,000 signatures, it will now undergo the official parliamentary review process.
The currently planned cryptocurrency income tax proposes a 22% tax rate (including local tax) on annual income exceeding 2.5 million KRW. While the ruling People Power Party is showing moves to reflect market concerns by proposing bills to abolish or re-defer the tax, the Democratic Party of Korea, the parliamentary majority, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance maintain that implementation should proceed as scheduled, setting the stage for intense political debate.
This policy uncertainty could act as a long-term variable affecting domestic investor sentiment and the price gap between domestic and international markets, known as the 'Kimchi Premium.' If the uncertainty regarding taxation continues, there is a possibility of potential selling pressure as the year-end approaches, with investors looking to avoid tax liabilities.
The confirmation hearing for the Prime Minister nominee scheduled for June 25–26 and the government's tax code amendment bill to be announced in July will be key turning points in gauging the direction of future tax reforms. Investors should avoid premature optimism and calmly monitor the review process by the Strategy and Finance Committee and the progress of bipartisan agreements.
