Kova: A Project Preparing for the Era Where AI Agents Make Payments Themselves

As AI agents evolve from simply answering questions to performing actual tasks, a new problem is emerging.

Specifically: "How can an agent pay for service costs?"

Recently, Kova, a project aimed at solving this problem, has been gaining attention in Japan.

Kova is an Agent Commerce platform that enables AI agents to connect with various services, perform direct payments when necessary, and utilize their features.

They are also currently recruiting Kova Skill Partners to expand their related ecosystem.

Why is it gaining attention?

Currently, most online services are built with the assumption that they will be used by humans.

The standard process involves signing up, receiving an API key, registering payment information, and then using the service.

However, in an era where AI agents perform tasks on their own, a different approach may be required.

If an agent needs to look up data, invoke functions, and purchase services on the fly, the existing account-centric structure has its limitations.

To address this, Kova is experimenting with a new user flow that connects various functions for AI agents to use, including payment integration.

Connection with x402

What is particularly interesting is that Kova is interested in new payment protocols like x402.

x402 is a protocol designed to leverage the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code, allowing AI agents to automatically perform payments before accessing APIs or digital resources.

The related ecosystem has been forming rapidly and is gaining traction as one of the key technologies bridging AI agents and internet payments.

Kova is also experimenting with a structure where agents can actually use and pay for services within this flow.

Growing interest in Japan

Although many of these are early-stage experiments, the concept of Agent Commerce—where agents use services and pay for them directly—is slowly becoming a reality.

Future possibilities

If AI agents evolve beyond simple conversational tools into actual digital workers, "how they can pay" will become just as important as "what they can do."

Kova is one of the projects leading this experimentation and is an interesting case study showing how AI agents and internet payments can be connected.
