Systemic Vulnerabilities in Domestic and Global Markets Exposed by Bithumb Regulatory Risks and MIM Depegging

Coupled with the recent contraction in the global macroeconomy, localized system vulnerabilities are being exposed across both the domestic virtual asset market and the DeFi ecosystem. In particular, the regulatory risks surrounding Bithumb, a major domestic exchange, and the way specific projects have handled security incidents are causing deep concern among investors.

Bithumb recently faced regulatory pressure after receiving a fine of approximately 210 million KRW from the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) for the unauthorized transfer of overseas user data. At the same time, market confusion is intensifying due to legal battles surrounding the delisting of Polaris Share (POLA) and the refusal to support a token swap following the $36 million hack of the Humanity (H) token, linked to North Korean phishing attacks.

In the DeFi space, Abracadabra’s algorithmic stablecoin, MIM, experienced a depegging of over 50%, forcing an emergency interest rate hike and spreading further risk. With these regulatory and operational risks from centralized exchanges (CEX) converging with the liquidity instability of decentralized finance (DeFi), questions are being raised once again regarding asset protection mechanisms for retail investors both at home and abroad.

During times of heightened market volatility, an exchange's regulatory compliance and a project's crisis management capability become key indicators that determine community trust. It is a time for investors to observe more closely not only the price trends of individual assets but also how off-chain regulatory risks and on-chain liquidity mechanisms interact.
