Global K-pop group Stray Kids has followed in the footsteps of BTS, effectively declaring a boycott by choosing not to submit their music for Grammy Award consideration. Their agency, JYP Entertainment, confirmed that they did not submit any music by the deadline for the 69th Grammy Awards. This move aligns with BTS, who declared their own boycott back in July. With two of the most influential groups in the global music market, boasting massive fandoms and commercial power, now refusing to participate, the Grammys are set to take a significant hit.
The reason these artists are turning their backs on the Grammys despite their voting eligibility is the newly created 'Best Asian Pop Music Performance' category by the Recording Academy. While the Grammys claimed this was a move toward diversity, the music industry and international media have strongly criticized it as a thinly veiled attempt to quarantine Asian artists away from the main award categories. By refusing to submit, the artists are playing a powerful card against the attempt to create barriers to entry for major categories based on language or region.
This decision is particularly symbolic as it was announced shortly after the Grammys declared they would push forward with the new category despite widespread opposition. The withdrawal of two acts that have topped the Billboard main album charts multiple times is expected to be a painful blow to both the prestige and public appeal of the awards ceremony. All eyes are now on how this direct confrontation—choosing to be judged on the value of their music rather than fitting into a Western-centric, authoritarian awards framework—will reshape the landscape of global music awards.
