Major Claude Projects Update: AI Agents Now Collaborate and Delegate
Have you been using Claude Projects merely as a drawer to store files or chats? On September 17, 2026, Anthropic completely overhauled this space. They introduced a 'Coordinator and Worker' system where multiple agents collaborate—much like an experienced project manager delegating tasks to team members. This feature is currently available in open beta for select Pro and Max users, with a gradual rollout to Team and Enterprise plans expected in the coming weeks.
Coordinator and Workers: AI Team Members That Delegate Automatically
The core of this update is the unique 'Coordinator and Worker' division of labor. Simply put, it’s like having a skilled project manager and a team of specialists joining your workspace to work alongside you.
When you set a major goal, such as 'build the login screen for this service and finish the security check,' a Coordinator agent takes charge and begins the analysis. The Coordinator breaks down the necessary steps, creates a plan, and quickly delegates tasks to the most suitable Worker agents.
Each Worker processes their assigned tasks in parallel within an independent cloud virtual environment. Because all agents share a real-time project memory, there is no need for Workers to repeat questions or manually ask about the progress of other tasks. They move organically, functioning like a perfectly synchronized, expert team.
Background Operations That Continue Even When You Close Your Laptop
Previously, if you closed your web browser or turned off your computer, your AI session would halt. With this update, however, tasks continue to run seamlessly in the background via cloud sessions.
For example, you can give instructions for complex development or data analysis and then close your laptop to head home. The Worker agents will continue collaborating in the cloud. They operate within their own code repository branches and share a common project memory, so you don't have to input the same instructions repeatedly.
This enables an asynchronous workflow where you can simply monitor progress on your smartphone during your commute. If you’ve been using AI only as a real-time chat tool, you now have a reliable virtual support team that can work for you overnight.
Who Can Use It? Eligible Plans and Upcoming Schedule
Is the new Claude Projects feature available to everyone right now? To be clear, it is currently in a conditional open beta with a phased rollout underway.
This update is initially available to some Claude Pro and Claude Max subscribers who are already using cloud sessions with Claude Code (a terminal-based AI development tool) and do not have existing projects created on the web or desktop app. It will be rolled out to other Pro and Max users, as well as Team and Enterprise plan subscribers, over the coming weeks. Until then, existing projects remain safely stored in their current folder format.
Team and Enterprise users working in collaborative environments should keep an eye out for upcoming permission management features. You will be able to choose whether to share projects with the entire organization or restrict access to designated members, as well as assign view-only or edit permissions to individual members. Large-scale group sharing features are scheduled to be provided to Enterprise plan users as a beta service.
From Chat Tool to Collaborative Space
Moving beyond simply asking questions and receiving answers, the workflow of setting goals and delegating tasks to AI is becoming more concrete. This Claude Projects update is an exciting first step toward turning the tool into a genuine collaborative workspace rather than just a file repository. If you have open beta access, why not create your own reliable AI workspace and start delegating your tasks?
