The Korea Consumer Agency recently announced the results of a quality comparison of seven popular carbon-plate running shoes currently on the market. The study included flagship models from Nike, New Balance, Adidas, Asics, Puma, Hoka, and Skechers. While all models were confirmed to provide excellent propulsion, there were distinct differences in detailed performance and price. The Asics model was the lightest, while the Nike and Puma models showed superior shock absorption. In terms of price, the Skechers model was the most affordable at around 180,000 KRW, while the Hoka model was the most expensive at around 270,000 KRW.
However, what has really become the talk of the town among runners alongside this report is a warning from Olympic marathon gold medalist Coach Hwang Young-jo. Through his YouTube channel, Coach Hwang expressed concern over the trend of beginner runners, who may lack sufficient ankle strength, blindly jumping into carbon running shoes. He stated that no matter how good a shoe is, it can actually do more harm than good if it doesn't match the wearer's skill level, even going so far as to say he wouldn't recommend them to beginners even if he were paid to.
Because the carbon fiber plate embedded in these shoes generates strong propulsion, it also places significant stress on the ankles and Achilles tendons. Beginners who haven't built up enough muscle strength can easily suffer from ankle rolls or joint strain when wearing shoes with high elasticity and thick soles. Since running is meant to improve your health, now is the time to prioritize choosing stable running shoes that match your physical capabilities and running form rather than just looking for the flashiest gear.
