The U.S. government has transferred approximately $297 million worth of Bitcoin and Ethereum to Coinbase Prime. According to on-chain tracking data from Arkham Intelligence and Galaxy Research, this transfer included 3,940.7 BTC and 30,014 ETH. These assets were identified as having been seized from dark web operators and money laundering cases.
Typically, when news breaks that a government has moved large assets to an exchange, the market reflexively tenses up, fearing a dump. However, it seems premature to interpret this transfer solely as a sign of an impending sell-off.
Coinbase Prime is a custody platform that supports asset storage and management for institutions, rather than just trading. There is also the political context of President Donald Trump signing an executive order to preserve seized Bitcoin as a national strategic asset. Therefore, this move is much more likely to be for operational management purposes, such as wallet consolidation, rather than an immediate market liquidation.
Still, as on-chain data tends to fluctuate with every government move, it is worth keeping a close eye on the transaction flow of government-owned wallets for the time being!
