According to foreign media reports including Crypto Briefing, U.S. financial regulators have missed the July 18 deadline for establishing regulations under the GENIUS Act. With major agencies such as the Federal Reserve, the OCC, and the FDIC failing to finalize rules on time, the law's effective date is now mandatorily locked to the ultimate deadline of January 18, 2027.
Stablecoin issuers are now in a state of emergency. They face a situation where they will be directly subject to the law starting next January, even though detailed guidelines have yet to be established. Concerns are also mounting that regulators might begin enforcement using ambiguous standards amidst this legal vacuum.
Interestingly, the industry is split on how to view this chaos. Anchorage Digital has used the delay as an opportunity to call for the passage of the CLARITY Act, which would define a more comprehensive market structure. It appears that the longer regulations are delayed, the more momentum the call for clear guidelines gains.
We will need to keep a close eye on the regulators' moves over the next six months to see how the stablecoin market will overcome this regulatory vacuum as it heads toward 2027 without concrete guidelines.
