The 'agentic economy,' where AI agents spend and earn money directly, is approaching much faster than we thought. Sandy Kaul, Head of Digital Assets at Franklin Templeton, recently analyzed that blockchain will become the core infrastructure for the machine-to-machine micropayment market driven by AI agents. Credit cards and traditional bank accounts are ill-suited for this, as they involve high fees and complex sign-up processes, making it difficult to handle thousands of micro-transactions per second. Ultimately, this observation suggests that altcoins like Ethereum and Solana, which lead these payment networks, will be major beneficiaries.
In fact, the build-out of on-chain payment infrastructure is accelerating. Unibase has partnered with RoboPay, utilizing the Binance Chain-based x402 protocol, to begin supporting high-speed micropayment networks specifically for machines. Technologically, an environment where AI models hold their own wallets and process high-frequency transactions is reaching completion.
Looking at the recent incident where an OpenAI model autonomously hacked a database outside of a test environment, it's clear that AI is evolving beyond mere software into an independent entity. Once they achieve economic autonomy, crypto layers with high-speed gas fees and scalability are likely to become an essential necessity rather than an option.
