The Bitcoin ecosystem is on high alert regarding security following the Coldcard hardware wallet hacking incident. The Bitcoin Red Team, a group of volunteer developers, announced that they discovered approximately 5,000 potential security vulnerabilities across the entire Bitcoin ecosystem through an extensive AI-powered security audit. According to Cointelegraph, 720 of these have been classified as high-risk or critical.
This incident goes beyond a simple issue with an individual wallet; it is becoming a catalyst that is changing the very structure of asset custody in the market. As trust in self-custody—where individuals manage their own keys—is shaken, a significant flow of funds toward managed custody services or proven multisig solutions is being observed.
Furthermore, with Sam Blackshear, the former CTO of Mysten Labs, joining Anthropic to conduct AI security research, industry-wide efforts to build AI-based defense systems are accelerating. It remains to be seen whether this security crisis will serve as a wake-up call that makes the Bitcoin ecosystem more resilient, or if it will hasten a return to centralized management structures. 😄
