Over the past day, a series of distressing and frightening fire accidents have been reported across the country. The nature and locations varied widely, from a dizzying vehicle fire inside a highway tunnel to an electric vehicle accident that resulted in fatalities, and even a battery explosion in a bedroom, the most private space of daily life.

Around 5:00 PM on August 21, a fire broke out in a 2.5-ton refrigerated truck traveling through the Cheongdo 2 Tunnel toward Daegu on the Daegu-Busan Expressway. Fortunately, there were no casualties as trailing vehicles maintained a safe distance of over 100 meters and evacuated quickly. However, the tunnel filled with smoke, and traffic was completely blocked, causing severe congestion stretching over 5km during the pre-weekend evening commute.

Earlier, around 11:00 AM in Dogo-myeon, Asan, South Chungcheong Province, an electric vehicle crashed into a guardrail and a utility pole before falling into a paddy field. The car caught fire immediately and was completely incinerated, leading to the tragic death of the driver in their 50s. Also, early the same morning, a fire at a pig farm in Masan Happo-gu, Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, resulted in the loss of about 380 pigs. In Sejong City, residents were startled when a portable battery charging on a nightstand in the master bedroom of an apartment on the 29th floor exploded, presumably due to thermal runaway.

From the confined space of a highway tunnel to the nightstand right by our beds, it was a day that served as a stark reminder of how close the danger of fire really is. It forces us to once again reflect on safety measures that are easy to overlook, such as the importance of maintaining a safe distance in tunnels or managing charging devices in our daily lives.
