The crypto ecosystem is currently undergoing a 'realignment,' moving beyond simple expansion toward fundamentally changing its structure to align with institutional regulations. Following Jack Dorsey's Block filing an application with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish a 'Builders Bank' dedicated to Bitcoin and stablecoin custody, DeFi protocols have also begun integrating regulatory compliance systems.
As the requirements for MiCA regulations and FATF guidelines become more stringent, Uniswap v4 has already introduced 'permissioned pools' that allow for on-chain regulatory compliance. Aave Horizon is also cementing this hybrid model, having already secured over $500 million in deposited assets. Interestingly, they are adopting Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP)-based identity verification systems to satisfy regulations while still maintaining privacy. By utilizing technologies like zkMe or Privado ID, they are enabling users to prove their identity without revealing personal information.
It seems like a clever move for DeFi, which once prided itself on being permissionless, to compromise with regulations to secure the practical benefits of attracting institutional capital. The recent rise in concerns over the physical and technical hacking risks of self-custody is also driving high-net-worth individuals and institutions to move toward regulated, custodial solutions.
However, there are concerns that this transition could eventually bifurcate the DeFi ecosystem into closed spaces under regulatory control and the original, permissionless spaces. It will be interesting to see how smoothly technical privacy and regulatory requirements can coexist on-chain.
