Introducing ChatGPT Work — What’s New with GPT-5.6?

On July 9, 2026, OpenAI officially launched 'ChatGPT Work,' a brand-new productivity tool powered by the new GPT-5.6 AI model.

While traditional ChatGPT functioned as a conversational assistant for answering questions, ChatGPT Work is more like an autonomous agent that plans and executes complex, multi-step tasks without human intervention. It even includes a scheduling feature that lets it handle tasks while you're away or even when your computer is turned off.

In this post, we will take a simple and clear look at the specific features ChatGPT Work offers in the desktop app and how you can immediately integrate it into your daily workflow.

The New Engine: GPT-5.6 Model Family

The core engine powering ChatGPT Work is the GPT-5.6 model family, unveiled alongside this launch. This lineup consists of three specialized models: Sol, Terra, and Luna.

Its biggest feature is the shift from simply answering questions to maximizing the 'ability to plan and execute autonomously.' If you give it a complex goal, the AI breaks it down into smaller, granular tasks and performs them step-by-step in a logical order.

It is essentially an agent-tailored model designed to act proactively by understanding the overall context of your work, much like a highly efficient assistant.

ChatGPT Work: Connecting to Your Workspace

With the revamp of its desktop app, OpenAI has integrated its former developer tool, the Codex app, directly into the ChatGPT app.

This integration provides three modes in the desktop app: 'Quick Chat' for simple conversations, 'Codex' for developers, and the newly added 'ChatGPT Work,' a dedicated workspace for automation.

When you activate the ChatGPT Work mode, it seamlessly connects not only to the files on your computer but also to major collaboration tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Google Drive.

Thanks to this, ChatGPT can plan and execute complex, multi-step tasks—like 'Summarize the sales report in that specific folder and share it to my work Slack channel'—without you having to intervene. It is a useful feature that significantly reduces the tedious manual work of switching between windows, copying, and pasting.

Working While You’re Away: 'Scheduled Tasks'

The most welcome feature for any work assistant is undoubtedly 'Scheduled Tasks.' The key benefit is that even if you close your laptop and turn your computer off completely, the AI continues to work in the background on your behalf via the cloud.

Many existing automation tools have limitations, requiring your computer to be powered on and a browser or program to be running. This feature, however, runs independently within OpenAI’s remote cloud environment. It executes tasks according to your schedule, regardless of whether your physical device is on or off.

Using it is simple. For example, you can neatly delegate recurring tasks, such as visiting specific websites to monitor for new information and organizing collected data into a report in Google Sheets. Imagine the convenience of opening your work messenger upon arriving at the office and finding that the AI has already finished compiling everything overnight.

Who Can Use It and How to Get Started?

ChatGPT Work is currently available first to Pro, Enterprise, and Edu plan users. Support for Plus and Business plan users will be rolled out sequentially soon.

The era of agent services that go beyond simple Q&A chat interfaces to actually 'doing work' by moving between your computer and collaboration tools has officially begun. If you are on an eligible plan, why not take this opportunity to start by scheduling those repetitive daily tasks and letting the AI handle them?
