Have you ever walked around for a while holding an empty cup while traveling? What if you could get permission to use trash cans in shops or buildings when you can't find anywhere to throw it away?
GomiGo, an entry for ETHGlobal Tokyo 2026, is a project that started with this thought. In this system, trash can operators register their operating hours and the types of waste allowed, and users verify their humanity via World ID to receive a code valid for 10 minutes. The concept is that you either input the code into a lock on the bin or show it to an employee, depending on the type of trash can.
The team explains that they limit users to receiving one code per day in the same zone, and that trash can information is recorded on the Ethereum Sepolia testnet. It is an idea based on sharing within the conditions set by the operator, rather than letting just anyone throw things away at will.
For now, this is just an experiment from a hackathon. It has not been confirmed as a service that can be used immediately in actual shops or buildings in Tokyo. It will be interesting to see how the accessibility of human verification and operator participation play out.
